A friend recently asked me, what my go-to evening bag was. I have a few, but I can tell you, it is not a clutch! Working in celebrity styling, the client is always paired with a clutch for evening. Useless rectangular hard-cases, barely holding a lipstick, awkwardly held in the hand, forgotten when tucked under the shoulder. Why would someone subject themselves to this torture?
In Fall and Winter, my go-to is The Row's Ascot bag. Mary Kate and Ashley, if you are reading, please bring this back! The one I own is velvet, and perfectly slouchy. Large enough to hold everything I need for a night out, and fits perfectly just above my wrist. I can hold a glass of wine with one hand, and partake in the passed hors d'oeuvres with the other. I would buy this bag ten times over, in every fabrication. For now, I'll continue searching the resale sites.
I'm not opposed to a crossbody for evening. Again, hands-free for partying. A Chanel wallet-on-a-chain is a classic, no brainer. Instantly elevates any outfit, holds your essentials (your doorman may have to hold your keys in order to fit that extra lip gloss), and works for any occasion. Wrap the chain around twice for a more polished look. This is another good wallet-on-a-chain, and you can never go wrong with Bottega Veneta.
I know, my evening bag choices do not scream evening, maybe that is why I like them. I could use any one of these for a Saturday night out, or a family get-together. Versatility is key. I think this Judith Lieber is adorable, and timeless (and has a chain!), but I can count on one hand the amount of times I would leave the house with it. It just doesn't make sense to me.
Go out, have fun, think about where you are going, you don't want to be that girl in the corner clutching a clutch.
