Rarely will an entire runway collection speak to me. Yes, one or two looks can stand out. Or when certain designers reach their pinnacle at a brand, i.e. Tom Ford's awe-inspiring final collection for Gucci and Phoebe Philo's forecasting at Chloe are unparalleled, pivotal moments in fashion history. But, seldom will a single runways' 54 looks literally speak to me.
Dries van Noten's Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear collection did just that. The simple, casual, elegance of layering menswear fabrics with lady-like silhouettes was exactly what I was looking for. He portrayed a no-fuss, attainable persona with do-it-yourself hair and glamourous sunglasses. This is me!
Immediately, I took my trench coat to the tailor to have the arms removed, after some convincing she did give into my demands for a sleeveless coat. This collection established the 'new neutrals'; army green and leopard print joined the ranks of navy, camel, black and grey. DvN brought grey sweatshirt material out of the gym and into Bergdorf Goodman.
Now, three years later on the cusp of another Fall season, this non-chanlant persona remains relevant.
