Wicker world...

I have wicker on the brain lately.  I am drawn to it in every form - furniture, lamps, trays, shades.  I would live in a wicker room if I could.
This photo from Lauren Santo Domingo's Southampton home has just the right amount of wicker.  The Mark D. Sikes chair pairs perfectly with the Soane Britain lamp and Atelier Vime pedestal.
This coffee/end table is a wicker steal and I love the wicker shade on this lamp.

Little things...

Posted by one of my favorite instagram follows, Luella & June, everything about this photo makes me happy.  Peonies, chunky charm bracelet, John Derian plate, Cartier tank - all of the classics.
Something that I did before stay-home, and continue to do, is create small vignettes, small spaces of happiness.
On this rainy morning, in week 10,000,000 of safer-at-home, maybe create a small space of happiness.

Le Summer...

Hello Summer!

Backyard barbecues are still happening and the sun will come out, hopefully.

I absolutely adore the table above by Alice Naylor Leyland.  She launched a tabletop line late last year, and each piece is simply divine.  Dying for this tablecloth set for solo dinners in my kitchen.

What are you wearing for your Summer driveway drinks?  MatchesFashion is having a 50% off sale.  Maybe time for the La Double J you've been eyeing, or maybe this sunny yellow eyelet from Lisa Marie Fernandez.

Home in need of a bit of a Summer refresh?  Serena & Lily has you covered.
I'd like to be socially distant in this chair,  I love the wicker shade on this lamp, and my love for this coffee table runs deep.

In need of a drink? I have a feeling it is going to be the Summer of the Paloma. A simple concoction of lime, grapefruit soda and tequila, it is simple and refreshing.  Why not have one in a charming acrylic tumbler

Moodboard...

This weekend marks the official start to Summer.   Usually this weekend is joyous, filled with travel plans, backyard get-togethers, and sunset soirĂ©es.
As this Summer will be a little different, it doesn't mean it can't still be fun.
Get outside, paint your toes, put on your Summer best, what are you waiting for?
I'll be channeling the below all Summer long!

Back at it...

At the start of safer-at-home I cooked a lot.  I did my best to have a zero-waste kitchen; stale bread turned into croutons, vegetables were cooked in large batches, and perishables were put in the freezer before they had to chance to over ripen.  It was a daily routine that forced me to be a little more clever than usual, try out new things.
Somewhere along the way I lost this.   I'm not cooking as much, not feeling creative, not inspired.  My goal as we approach a new Season is to get back to this - cook, look up recipes, get excited about something.

Already on my list is a Summer favorite from Martha Stewart (bonus, I already have all of the ingredients), No-Knead Bread (again, I have the ingredients, not sure about an oven safe dutch oven though) and maybe a trip to the farmers market will result in a fruit crostata.

Wash your hands...

The things that excite me now are much simpler: finding hand sanitizer, reusable gloves, making masks, no line at Whole Foods, and soap.  I have new appreciation for hand soap, sophisticated smells, non drying, luxurious soap.  Byredo is the best.

The Ivy...

Years ago, a friend and I went to LA and we had to eat at The Ivy.  At the time, it was the spot to see celebrities.  I remember walking down Robertson Blvd, feeling ever so chic, we were going to the Ivy.  Our big celebrity sighting, Michael Bolton.  Not quite what we anticipated.
The charm of the restaurant did not disappoint.  We sat outside, I cannot remember what we ate, but I remember the china - the gorgeous hand painted green, blue and pink painted plates, bowls, pitchers, everywhere!
I love how various china patterns become synonymous with establishments - the Bernardaud stripes at Claridge's; Vietri's Campagna at almost any rustic Italian restaurant, and now the Ivy.
Place setting for one please!

Just Beautiful...

Mark D. Sikes is one of my favorite instagram figures.
I'd like to think we would get along, we seem to like a lot of the same things: blue & white, Grace, Jackie, stripes, navy things, the Ralph Lauren 'Anette' floor lamp,  boxwood, and much more.
Lucky for me, he has a new book coming out in September, More Beautiful.  Sure to be filled with gorgeous images of his home in Los Angeles  and projects across the globe, I cannot wait to see in person.  Something to look forward to!

I scream...

Homemade ice cream!
No fancy equipment needed.  Just a mason jar, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract and salt.  Thank you New York Times!

Basic recipe:
1 cup of heavy cream
1 1/2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
pinch of salt
16 oz Mason jar

Pour the cream, sugar, vanilla and salt into the jar and secure tightly.
Shake vigorously, until the cream thickens nearly doubling in size, about 5 minutes.  When the mixture is the consistency of brownie batter, it is ready.
Freeze for at least 3 hours.
Eat.

Yields about 3 servings.

Add-ins: blend in 1/2 cup of fresh berries to mixture before putting in the freezer.

Sweet sleep...

Not only am I overly obsessed with table settings at the moment, I am also quite taken with bedding.  In particular monogram appliquĂ© shams.  I've always loved seeing EJT in beautiful script monograms on everything from linens to stationary, but lately I love the boldness of appliquĂ©.  Etsy has some fabulous, reasonably priced options to add to your bed-scape.

Open for business...

Laura Vinroot Poole's shop, Capitol, in North Carolina has long been on my destination wishlist.  Traveling for a store?  Yes! Laura has the most impeccable eye and her store is a jewelbox of color, fashion, and bijoux.
Capitol opened their doors again over the weekend.  The shop was prepared with Purell and masks, "for me, the important thing is making sure the public feels like it's a safe space", Vinroot Poole told Vogue.
A space space indeed.

Setting the table...

Setting the table is one of the things bringing me joy right now.  Pairing linens with plates, glasses, and silver, different variations throughout the day.  It is small, but it really is a mood booster, a pretty placemat can work wonders.
I am not the only one dressing up my table.  My instagram feed is filled with gorgeous tabletops!  One thing I have noticed on a few tables, Richard Ginori 'Oriente Italiano' china.  It was not love a t first sight for me, but now after seeing in a few settings I get it.  The colors are happy and the designs are whimsical, exactly what we need now.
Ginori has a special spot in my heart as it is my parents wedding china, and Mom has a set of these gorgeous dessert plates.

Shoeday Saturday...

These Jenni Kayne sandals pop up on my instagram feed almost daily.
They are the perfect warm weather addition to my grocery shopping/curbside pick-up garb!

Weekend activities...

In between celebrating Mom and picking up my Blue Hill to-go box, I will be making masks.  Face coverings are going to be part of our new normal for a long time, best to have a stash for yourself, and your friends and family.
Jessie Randall, of Loeffler Randall, posted a charming how-to guide on Youtube that I plan on following.  Now, if I had only bought more Liberty print fabric when I was in London last Summer!

Happy Weekend!

Gingham galore...

Maybe it is because the world is such a scary place at the moment,  I want to surround myself with sweetness. I am drawn to ginghams, florals, swiss-dot, rick-rack, pale blues, pinks, and greens.  Soft pale hues are so comforting to me right now.

Gingham melamine plates, under $2 each!
Gingham tablecloth, also a steal!
These napkins are on my wishlist,
Stay in bed all day jammies,
These sneaks remind me of when I twinned with Mom,
A sweet dress to sashay around the house in.

Not gingham, but this drink set would be chic on your gingham table!

*yes, I realise they are all blue... oh well!

Cooking sustainably...

The New York Times has done an amazing job keeping readers engaged and entertained throughout our time at home.  From their new At Home section, to the glorious puzzle section in last weekends delivery, to their live stream events.    Recently I watched chef Marcus Samuelson in conversation with chef Matthew Orlando about cooking sustainably.  Marcus shared that he, and his family, have been eating a vegetarian diet during the pandemic, and cooked a delicious looking dish on charred vegetables and chickpea dip.  Lucky for us, he just shared the recipe!

Charred Vegetables with Red Flaxseed Vinaigrette and Chickpea Dip

INGREDIENTS:
2 tbsp flaxseeds
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp smoked paprika
1⁄4 tsp chili powder
1⁄2 cup + 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Kosher salt & pepper
1 lemon, juiced
1 tsp honey
1 tsp soy sauce
4 broccoli florets, stems reserved
4 cauliflower florets, stems reserved
1⁄2 cup shiitake mushrooms, sliced and stems reserved
4 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
1 tbsp rice wine vinegar
1 Persian cucumber, skin on and diced (if Persian cucumber are unavailable, use 1⁄4 of an English cucumber)
1⁄2 cup chickpea flour
1 tsp berbere
Injera, tortillas or flatbreads, for serving
Fresh herbs, for serving (flat leaf parsley, cilantro, and chervil would all work great here)

FLAXSEED VINAIGRETTE
In a small pan, heat 1 tbsp olive oil over medium heat. Add the flaxseeds and two thinly sliced garlic cloves and cook until the garlic has taken on a golden hue, about 3 minutes. Remove the mixture from the heat and transfer to a bowl. Stir in 1⁄2 tsp cumin, 1⁄2 tsp paprika, chili powder, lemon juice, honey and soy sauce. Slowly whisk in 1⁄2 cup of olive oil until emulsified. Season to taste with salt & pepper.

CHICKPEA DIP
To make the shiro, combine 2 cups of water, chickpea flour, berbere, salt and pepper in a small pot. Bring to a simmer and cook for 45 minutes.
While the shiro is cooking, bring another small pot of water to a boil. Season with salt and add the reserved broccoli, cauliflower, and mushrooms stems. Cook until tender, about 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
After 45 minutes have passed, take the shiro off the stove and transfer to a blender along with the cooked mushroom, cauliflower and broccoli stems. Puree until smooth.

CHARRED VEGETABLES
Heat a medium cast-iron pan over medium high heat with 1 tbsp of olive oil. Once the oil is shimmering, add the broccoli florets, cauliflower and mushrooms. Add in 1⁄2 tsp cumin, 1⁄2 tsp smoked paprika, salt and pepper. Cook for about 4 minutes, leaving the vegetables undisturbed so they develop a nice char. Flip each piece and add in the remaining 2 cloves of thinly sliced garlic and salt & pepper. Toss to combine and cook for another 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and add in the rice wine vinegar. Transfer charred broccoli and mushroom mixture to a bowl and toss with the vinaigrette and diced cucumber.

READY TO PLATE
Heat up some injera or flatbread of choice and set on a plate. Spread chickpea dip on top, followed by the charred vegetable salad. Garnish with fresh herbs and serve.

Remember when...

Remember getting dressed?  With jewelry and shoes!!
I do force myself to get dressed, sort of, everyday.  Admittedly, I was better about this early on, now in week 9 I'll try to be better.

I miss getting dressed, it was/is so much of who I am.  I wore a dress to pick up take-out the other night, and it was delightful! I felt like me.  I am a dress girl.  I just spied this steal of a dress, ideal for a birthday brunch (zoom), and for sashaying from the kitchen to the porch, lemonade in hand.

Blue Hill...

I say this almost daily, I am beyond impressed with restaurants, companies, individuals who have sat down, examined their craft, and reworked their approach to succeed in the current climate.  Restaurants offering contact less ordering and pick-up, shops donating portions of their already limited sales to charity, fitness instructors moving their classes to screens.  Each provide a service and are able to maintain a slice of normalcy for their clients.

I imagine that restaurants will remain closed in the NY area for a while longer.   Blue Hill is using their resources to create to-go orders.  You can choose from a veggie box, protein box, pastry box (!), garde manger box (supplementing your pantry), bread, eggs, beverages, and beyond.  I cannot wait to order one, or two, for this weekend!  Bravo Dan Barber.

One of my favorite Dan Barber stories is when Alain Ducasse went to visit Blue Hill and had opinions on Barber's famous butter.  Read the full story here.

And, if you are like me and miss the 92Y lecture series terribly, watch Ira Glass in conversation with Dan Barber from 2014.  I was in the audience at this lecture!
